Instilling Christian values in children at an early age is important. As what Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” As parents, it is our responsibility to mold our children into morally upright human beings. By following the way of Christ, our children can be directed into the right path in life. However, following Christ’s character is rather easier said than done. One of the most important things you can do for your children is to help them develop it.
Environment and People
It all boils down to environment and people. Raising your child in a Christian environment is as important as the act of instilling Christian values. Before you even build your children’s character, they have to be able to see it first. Whether it is at home or in school, your children must be exposed to a surrounding wherein Christian values are exhibited by the people. Of course that means at home, your children must see it from you first, from their siblings, and in school, from their teachers and classmates. That is why enrolling your children in a school which follows biblical principles is as crucial as raising them as Christians at home.

Teaching Christ-like Character
Search the scriptures for standards that God expects from everyone like honesty, patience, integrity, and etc. Read the text passage to your children. Teach these characters not only in words but also in deeds. Of course, you have to walk the talk – never forget to set yourself as a good example.
Utilize actual moments or experiences in your children’s life as an opportunity to teach them a character. For example, when a child of yours gets into a fight with a friend, teach and explain the value of forgiveness and apologies. Remember, experiences are our greatest teachers.
Instilling Christ-like character, however, requires time and patience both from you and your children. If your children commit mistakes, do not be quick to point out their failures. Encourage them to do better. On another note, make it a point to acknowledge their good behavior. Let them know you are proud. You know what they say; a little honey goes a long way.
